A total of 4 million people became homeless in 1083 villages of Azad Kashmir in October 08 worst ever earthquake, while 72,000 were killed and 69,000 people were injured in Azad Kashmir and NWFP, said an ISPR press release here on Tuesday.

In Azad Kashmir the districts of Muzaffarabad, Bagh and Rawlakot were the most affected areas while district Batgram and Mansehra were the worst hit areas in NWFP.

According to a survey a total of 4 million people became Homeless in 1083 villages of Azad Kashmir only. Over 171884 mud houses were completely demolished due to earthquake while approximately 100000 houses were partially damaged.

Relief and Rescue operations by the Pakistan Army commenced immediately after the news of earthquake was received in General Headquarters.

After the rescue operation was over the relief activities commenced at full pace. During last one month 334235 tents, 3188857 blankets, 3961 tons of ration, 3859 tonnes of medicines and 9945 tonnes of miscellaneous relief items had been shifted to affected areas for distribution among affected people.

All affected areas had been assessed till now and relief items had been provided to them either by helicopter, troops on foot or by mule. There were certain areas where relief items were provided even third or fourth time.

A lot of telecommunication infrastructure was disrupted in the earthquake-affected areas, which had been put right by Special Communication Organisation following an exhaustive effort.

As many as 32 exchanges and 17463 telephone lines in Azad Kashmir had been restored which were disrupted due to earthquake. Similarly in NWFP 19 exchanges and 13902 telephone lines had also been restored by PTCL.

Presently, over 12 field hospitals by foreign medical teams had been established in the earthquake-affected areas of Azad Kashmir. Six field hospitals were established in Muzaffarabad, one in Gari Dupatta, two in Bagh, one in Rawlakot, one in Panjkot and one in Patikka for treatment of the patients.

As many as 123 doctors and 230 paramedics of the Pakistan Army had set up four forward treatment centers in the quake affected areas of AJK and NWFP while as many as sixteen medical treatment teams were also providing necessary relief to the affected people in forward areas.

Beside treatment in forward areas more that 22000 seriously injured were evacuated to hospitals in the major cities. Most of the patients were discharged to various rehabilitation centres or to their homes after necessary medical treatment.

At CMH 4976 patients underwent major operations and 7043 were treated for minor operations. 18 surgical teams and 21 heath services comprising civil doctors were also committed in providing medical treatment to the needy people.

The countries which have assisted Pakistan are Azerbaijan, Poland, Iran, UAE, USA, Greece, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Russia, France, Czech Republic, Jordan, Spain, Singapore, Turkey, China, Japan, Germany, Malaysia, Netherlands, Sweden, Hungary, Belgium, Cyprus, Qatar, Austria, South Africa, Cuba, Ukraine, Canada, South Korea, Libya, Kyrgystan, Lebanon, Estonia, Nato, Uzbekistan, Thailand, Turkmenistan, Bangladesh, India, UK, Indonesia, Tajikistan, Luxemburg, Brazil, Kuwait, Bahrain, Nepal, Croatia, Oman, Libya, Sudan and Afghanistan.

A total of 1005 tonnes of relief items had been received by allied countries for distribution among affectees of 8th October earthquake, ISPR concluded.
